Getting the app

Where can I get Mr. White?

On iPhone and iPad, from the App Store. On Android, from Google Play. Version 1.1 is out on both. The Mac version is coming soon to the Mac App Store: leave your email on the home page and we'll send you one email when it's out.

What's new in version 1.1?

  • 7 languages: English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Indonesian, for the app, the words, and the bots and their voices.
  • A new Home: your level, streak and credits at the top, with the leaderboard and How to play one tap away.
  • Achievements and leaderboards: in Google Play Games on Android, and in Game Center on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
  • Widget and shortcuts: a streak widget, and Play with bots from the app icon or Quick Settings (Control Center and Siri on iPhone).
  • Foldables: half open, every screen splits at the fold.
  • Seasonal word packs: Halloween now, Diwali in India, Christmas in December.

Playing with friends

I can't see the room.

Everyone needs to be on the same WiFi network or the same phone hotspot. Some public, office and guest WiFi networks stop devices from seeing each other; a phone hotspot fixes that every time.

Still nothing? On the Join screen, tap Can't find rooms? Enter host IP and type the address shown under the PIN on the host's screen.

The app says Local Network access is off.

Mr. White needs Local Network access to find other players.

  • iPhone and iPad: Settings › Mr. White › turn on Local Network.
  • Mac: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network › turn on Mr. White.

Can iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android play together?

Yes. Any of them can host, and any of them can join. Mixed rooms work the same as single-platform ones.

How many players do we need?

4 to 12, and bots count. With 5 or more you can add an Undercover, who gets a similar word and doesn't know they're the impostor.

Do we need internet?

Not for games with friends: rooms run over your local network or a phone hotspot. Bot games need internet, because the bots think and talk on our servers.

The host closed the app. What now?

The host's device runs the game, so keep the app open on it. If the host drops out briefly, everyone reconnects when they're back. If the host leaves for good, the game ends and someone can host a new room.

How do I change my name?

Open Settings (the gear at the top right of the home screen) and type a new name.

How do I change the language?

Settings › Language. App language changes the app's own text; Automatic follows your phone. Words and bots sets the language of the secret words and the bots, and the host can also pick it for each room or bot game.

Does it work on foldable phones?

Yes. Half open, every screen splits at the fold: on a book-style fold you watch on the left and play on the right; on a flip or a phone stood on a table, the bottom half is where you tap. Fully open, the game stays in a comfortable column in the middle.

Playing with bots

What are the bots?

AI players, marked with a sparkle wherever they appear. They give clues, talk before the vote, answer when you talk to them, and vote. Their words come from Anthropic's Claude and their voices from ElevenLabs. Tap Play with bots on the home screen to play alone with 3 to 11 of them, or tap Add bot in a room to fill out your table.

How do I talk to them?

Tap the mic and talk, then tap again to stop (or hold it while you talk). Or type. Say a bot's name and that bot answers. If you chose Type instead the first time, the microphone stays off.

A bot said something it shouldn't have.

Long-press the line in the game's log and choose Report this line. We review every report.

Can I mute them, or the music?

Yes. The buttons at the top right of every game screen mute the music and the bots' voices; their lines still show as text, and you can tap a line to hear it again. Settings has the same switches.

Levels and leaderboards

How do levels and the bots' skill work?

Every bot game earns XP: for playing, for winning, for sharper bots and bigger tables, and for your first game of the day. XP never goes down, and levels come quickly at first. The bots learn your level: your first games are easy, wins make them sharper and losses ease them off. Every fifth game is a Sharp table: sharper bots, bonus XP for a win, and nothing lost if you don't.

How does the streak work?

Finish any game, with friends or bots, on a new day and your streak grows. Every 7 days in a row saves a streak freeze (you can hold two), and a missed day uses one by itself. The streak is kept on your device.

Who sees me on the leaderboards?

Boards show your name, level and XP from bot games: this week or all time, among friends, in your country, or worldwide. To appear as "Player" and a code instead, turn off Show my name on leaderboards in Your progress. Long-press anyone else to report their name or hide them.

How do I add friends?

Open Your progress (tap your name at the top left of the home screen) › Leaderboard › Friends. Share your 6-character friend code, or type a friend's code and tap Add. You'll see each other on your friends board. Long-press a friend to remove them.

Where are my achievements?

On Android they're in Google Play Games: once you're signed in to Play Games, open Settings › Achievements or Your progress. On iPhone, iPad and Mac they're in Game Center. There are 16 to unlock, and your bot-game XP also goes to the Play Games and Game Center leaderboards.

How do I add the streak widget?

On Android, touch and hold your home screen › Widgets › Mr. White › Streak. On iPhone and iPad: touch and hold the Home Screen › Edit › Add Widget › Mr. White.

Is there a shortcut to play with bots?

On Android, touch and hold the app icon for Play with bots or Host a room, or add the Play with bots tile to Quick Settings. On iPhone, say "Play Mr. White with bots" to Siri, or add the Play with bots control to Control Center.

Credits and purchases

What are credits?

Bot games use credits: one credit plays a table of 4 to 6 players, bigger tables use 2 or 4. You see the price before every game, and you're only charged when the game starts. Credits you buy never expire, and while you have any, ads are off.

I bought credits but they're not there.

Your purchase is safe. Credits are added once our server has checked the purchase with Apple or Google, which needs internet. Open Play with bots again while online and they'll arrive. Still missing after a day? Email us with the date of the purchase.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by the store you bought from: request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com for Apple, or in your Google Play order history for Android. If our servers fail during a game, before anyone has voted, that game's credits come back on their own.

Your data and safety

What do you keep about me?

Nothing for games with friends: they never reach our servers. For bot games we keep an anonymous account with your credits, level and stats, and your name on the boards if you choose to show it. The Privacy Policy has the details.

How do I delete my data?

In the app: Settings › Bot games › Delete my data. It's deleted straight away, credits included. Can't open the app? Here's how to ask us.

How do I turn the AI bots off?

Settings › Bot games › turn off Allow AI bots. Nothing more goes to the AI services, and bot games ask again before the next one. Talk to bots with the mic switches the mic off and keeps typing.

How do I report a player or an ad?

Long-press a name on a leaderboard to report it or hide that player. For an inappropriate ad, use Settings › Report an ad, or email us what it showed and when. We review every report and reply as soon as we can.
